At the heart of DidgeNet, Michael Mieni a proud Wangkumara, Barkindji & Ngemba man
First Nation peoples have been inventors, designers & engineers for thousands of years. And although we now live in a modern technology rich environment, never has there been so many opportunities to capture and leverage first nation knowledge to design and build our collective future.
Through my education & career, I have seen first-hand how technology can create positive and meaningful outcomes for businesses, people and communities. Cultural preservation, education and innovation are my key priorities to create the right tools I feel are vital for future generations.
My vision is for DidgeNet to connect traditional and modern knowledge, to create sustainable products and services within communities throughout Australia.

Using Aboriginal traditions to teach tech
Michael Mieni is the first-ever Indigenous IT honours student at the University of Technology Sydney, and he wants to make sure he isn’t the last: By using Aboriginal traditions to bridge the digital divide in Indigenous communities, he says, we can reveal untapped brilliance.
DidgeNet
The name DidgeNet combines the strengths of two elements,
Firstly, ‘Didge’ symbolizing the Yidaki (Didgeridoo). A traditional instrument used in ceremonies, protocols and as an educational practice to pass down cultural knowledge to future generations.
Secondly, ‘Net’ or ‘network’, representing a group of connected computes with a shared communication protocol, symbolizing the connection First Nation peoples have with the land and water which form the streams, rivers and channels throughout Australia.
The DidgeNet logo was inspired by my early years studying technology. I learned information systems consist of inputs, processing and outputs. Through my lived experience, I have carried the importance of family, culture and connection and wanted to demonstrate everyone coming together.
